看到了圖左下方那個沒有頭的男孩了嗎？在美國，閱讀課外讀物的青少年中，女生是男生的3倍。但是 Robert Lipstyle 在紐約時報中為男孩們叫屈：因為出版商知道有3/4的讀者是女生，所以他們理所當然的投其所好。
在文中他也引用了 Jon Scieszka 所說的「... don’t feel comfortable exploring the emotions and feelings found in fiction. . . . Boys don’t have enough positive male role models for literacy. Because the majority of adults involved in kids’ reading are women, boys might not see reading as a masculine activity. (男孩們) 無法自在在從小說中探索他們的情緒和感覺 ... 在文學中沒有足夠多的正向男性典範。參與閱讀活動的大部分都是女性，所以男孩們認為閱讀不夠 MAN。」
那麼要怎樣叫男孩們看書呢？ Robert Lipsyte 說「If we’re to ... encourage reading among boys ... boys need to be approached individually with books about their fears, choices, possibilities and relationships — the kind of reading that will prick their dormant empathy, involve them with fictional characters and lead them into deeper engagement with their own lives. This is what turns boys into readers. 個別提供給男孩們那些關於他們的恐懼、抉擇、展望和關係的書 — 那些戳到他們心底內在靈識，教他們自己的切身生活和書中虛構人物交流交織。這樣男孩就會變為讀者。」
Robert Lipsyte 是得過艾美獎和 ALA 終身貢獻獎的資深運動記者和作家。

本來是洛杉磯和德國美軍基地的小學老師，經常唸故事給孩子聽。唸著... 唸著... 她想說也許自己也來試試看寫寫故事。寫著... 寫著... 就寫了100多本了，有繪本、讀本、也有小說。其中有許多是和她的畫家先生 Jim McMullan 共同創作的。

兩本紐伯瑞銀牌獎: 1984的《The Wish Giver》和1983《Graven Images》的封面和插畫家。他的畫風色彩豐富濃厚卻又明亮活潑，搭配卡通般暢塊流轉的線條，動感十足，充滿了故事力。所以許多作家的改寫都喜歡找他合作，例如西非傳說的蜘蛛與烏龜、伊索寓言的龜兔賽跑、格林童話裡的布來梅樂隊... 等等。
